Q: CAN YOU HELP ME WITH MY CHILD’S HAIR?

A: Yes. Currently we offer the following hair and skin care education options:

  • Crowning Curls Workshops: for congregate care organizations that serve Black-identifying children of color, such as group homes and shelters

  • Crown Coaching Sessions: for Black-identifying children of color in foster and adoptive care and their caregivers

Q: WHY DO YOU FOCUS SPECIFICALLY ON BLACK-IDENTIFYING CHILDREN OF COLOR IN FOSTER AND ADOPTIVE CARE?

A: We specifically serve Black-identifying children of color in foster and adoptive care because this demographic has been historically underserved and overrepresented in the child welfare system. The decision to focus our efforts on this group is driven by a deep-seated commitment to addressing long-standing disparities and inequities.

Here's why we prioritize this mission:

  • Historical Disparities: Black children have historically faced disparities in the child welfare system. They are often overrepresented in foster care and may experience longer stays in care compared to other racial groups. These disparities highlight a systemic issue that demands attention and targeted solutions.

  • Culturally Specific Needs: Black children often have unique cultural and hair care needs that are not adequately addressed by existing resources and organizations. Their distinct hair textures and cultural backgrounds require specialized support, education, and resources.

  • Empowerment and Identity: Our mission goes beyond providing basic care; it's about empowering Black children to embrace their cultural identity with pride. By offering culturally specific resources, we help them connect with their heritage, fostering a sense of belonging and self-esteem.

  • Supporting Caregivers: We recognize that caregivers of Black children may also lack access to culturally tailored guidance on hair and skin care. Our services extend to these caregivers, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to provide the best possible care.

  • Closing the Gap: There are existing resources and organizations that serve other children in care. However, there has been a historical gap in services designed to meet the culturally specific needs of the children we serve. We aim to close this gap and ensure that every child, regardless of their background, receives the support they need.

In essence, our commitment to serving Black-identifying children in foster and adoptive care is rooted in a dedication to rectify historical injustices, address unmet needs, and create a more equitable child welfare system. We firmly believe that every child deserves to be seen, valued, and supported, and our mission reflects this unwavering belief in the potential of all children.
