Cut it Forward is a nonprofit organization providing culturally specific hair and skin care resources for foster and adopted children of color and their caregivers.

ORIGIN STORY

MISSION: Cut it Forward is a nonprofit organization providing culturally specific hair and skin care resources for foster and adoptive children of color and their caregivers.

VISION: A future where all foster and adopted children are connected to their needs.

In 2013 our co-founders began addressing the many challenges that children of color face when it comes to their ethnic hair and skin care needs in foster and adoptive care. Through product drives, public speaking, and free hair care services, the duo dedicated countless hours to shed light on these needs and to be a resource to children and families.

After years of volunteering, planning, and advocating on behalf of these challenges, in 2014 they launched Cut it Forward and began to serve various communities under this initiative. Other community leaders joined their efforts in 2018 and together they activated as a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization to address these culturally specific needs on a larger scale.

Priding itself as an organization representative of individuals with lived experience, foster care alumni committee members of Cut it Forward know about these challenges all too well after growing up in the foster care system. Some members began advocating on behalf of these needs as young as 15 years old while they were still in care by speaking on panels, at trainings, and various events.

With an intention to create more accessible hair and skin care resources, Cut it Forward has become a nationally recognized resource to children, families, and child welfare professionals.

OUR WHY

MANY CHILDREN OF COLOR ENTER FOSTER AND ADOPTIVE CARE WITH THEIR CULTURALLY SPECIFIC HAIR AND SKIN CARE NEEDS UNMET OR MISUNDERSTOOD.

This situation poses significant challenges for these children, creating obstacles that can lead to an unfortunate disconnection from their own culture and identity. The impact of this disconnection can be profound, affecting their self-esteem, sense of belonging, and overall well-being.

At Cut it Forward, we hold a deep conviction that every child stepping into the realm of care, and every compassionate caregiver opening their heart and home, deserves unwavering support for these essential needs. Our commitment stems from understanding the profound importance of fostering a sense of pride and belonging in these young lives.

Hair and skin care are not merely superficial aspects; they are deeply intertwined with a child's sense of self. Nurturing their unique hair textures and skin tones goes beyond physical care—it's a message that their culture, heritage, and identity are embraced and valued. By addressing these specific needs, we send a powerful message that their individuality matters and that they are seen and celebrated for who they are.

OUR IMPACT TO DATE

  • "I have reframed how I look at hair day. I no longer view it as a 'task'. I now view it as time I get to spend with my daughter making sure she knows how special and beautiful she is. It has really changed from a 'have to' chore to something I look forward to doing because we get to spend time together."

Katy L., Adoptive Mom - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

  • "Getting my hair done is a magical feeling. I feel better, more confident, and my worries go away."

    -Foster Child

  • "I'm not sure where you found that woman, but I'm convinced that our Crown Coach is an angel- and I'm not even religious."

Kat L., Foster Mom - Midwest City, Oklahoma

  • "So thankful for you guys and the workshop on Sunday! When we first started fostering, I had no clue what to do with the little girl's hair that was placed in our care! If I would have had the knowledge that you guys gave me, it would have made that placement much easier! I will be prepared in the future for sure! Thank you so much!"

    - Foster Mom

  • "It’s fun to see them come downstairs each morning and show me something new they have done with their hair, or want me to touch their hair to “see how soft it is." You can tell they are really proud of themselves and their hair now."

    - Foster Mom

  • "I feel much more connected with my black foster kids through learning hair care together. Also, I feel very comfortable starting up a conversation with a person of color about their hair. I would never have been able to connect with people in this way before. It’s great!"

    - Foster Mom

  • "The last week it has been such a joy to see my kids take pride in fixing their hair and the smiles because THEY did it versus mom doing it have been priceless."

    - Adoptive Mom

  • "It made me feel valued as a parent. So often as a white mom with black children I feel like our story is always on display. We can't go anywhere in public without glances or questions 'who is their mom' etc. My children know they are different. The class empowered me to own our story and to know that I'm doing a good job as a parent. Our Crown Coach even made me cry because I didn't realize how much insecurities I had as a white mom for black kids. I just want to be the very best mom, and I know there are things and perspectives I cannot give my kids as a white woman, but she reassured me that I am a good mom and I am a good mom to them."

    - Adoptive Mom

  • "I was so excited to see my daughter’s real hair texture when our Crown Coach showed me the proper way to wash her hair. I had no idea that she could have soft, moisturized curls and it didn’t have to be a battle to comb out her hair. We came home and she wanted to show everyone her pretty hair and she actually wanted me to braid her hair! She has never WANTED me to braid her hair, but thanks to our training we are both more confident in my hair styling skills."
